AQA GCSE Geography (8035) structure

  • Paper 1 Living with the physical environment (1 hr 30, 88 marks including 3 for SPaG): Section A The challenge of natural hazards, Section B The living world, Section C Physical landscapes in the UK (answer two of coasts, rivers, glacial).
  • Paper 2 Challenges in the human environment (1 hr 30, 88 marks including 3 for SPaG): Section A Urban issues and challenges, Section B The changing economic world, Section C The challenge of resource management (resources plus one of food, water, energy).
  • Paper 3 Geographical applications (1 hr 15, 76 marks including 6 for SPaG): Section A Issue evaluation using a pre-release resource booklet, Section B Fieldwork (both your own enquiries and unfamiliar fieldwork), plus geographical skills throughout.

Command words and mark bands

  • Low-tariff: identify, state, label, calculate (1-2 marks) — no explanation needed, just accuracy.
  • Mid-tariff: describe (patterns with data), explain (reasons with links), suggest (applied reasoning) — 4-6 marks, use connectives such as 'this means that' and 'as a result'.
  • High-tariff: assess, evaluate, to what extent, discuss (6 or 9 marks, often plus 3 SPaG) — need balanced argument, place-specific detail and a clear justified conclusion.

SPaG marks
Marks for spelling, punctuation, grammar and specialist terminology on extended answers.
Issue evaluation
AQA Paper 3 Section A decision-making exercise based on a pre-release booklet.
Pre-release booklet
Resource booklet issued in advance of AQA Paper 3.
Assess
Weigh up factors and reach a supported judgement.
To what extent
Judge how far a statement is true, giving both sides.
Place-specific detail
Named examples, figures and facts from a case study.

Common exam traps

  • Answering all three UK physical landscapes in Paper 1 Section C — you only answer two, wasting time.
  • Writing generic answers in 9-mark questions with no named place or figures.
  • Ignoring the resource booklet in Paper 3 and relying only on memorised content.
