Commercialisation and the golden triangle

  • The golden triangle of sport describes the interdependent relationship between sport, sponsorship and the media.
  • Sponsors provide money/equipment to sport in exchange for advertising and positive association with success.
  • The media broadcasts sport to generate revenue, and increased media coverage attracts more sponsors and increases a sport's popularity.
  • Advantages of commercialisation include more funding, higher-quality facilities, wider audiences and higher performer wages.
  • Disadvantages include changes to rules/timing of events to suit TV audiences, less loyal 'sanitised' atmospheres, and pressure on performers to succeed for sponsors.

Technology in sport

  • Technology improves performance analysis (e.g. GPS trackers, heart rate monitors) and officiating accuracy (e.g. goal-line technology, video review).
  • It can improve safety through better equipment design (helmets, protective padding) and playing surfaces.
  • Disadvantages include high cost limiting access for lower-level sport, and disruption to the flow of the game during reviews.

Key terms

Commercialisation
The process of running sport as a business to generate profit.
Golden triangle
The interlinked relationship between sport, sponsorship and the media.
Sponsorship
Financial or material support given to sport in exchange for promotion/advertising.
Anabolic steroids
Drugs that increase muscle mass and strength, with serious health risks.
Beta blockers
Drugs that reduce heart rate and control anxiety, used in precision sports.
Diuretics
Drugs that increase urine production to lose water weight or mask other drugs.

Common exam traps

  • The golden triangle links sport, sponsorship AND media — leaving one out is an incomplete answer.
  • Beta blockers reduce heart rate/anxiety (precision sports); stimulants increase alertness (endurance/team sports) — don't mix these up.
  • EPO/peptide hormones and blood doping both boost oxygen-carrying capacity but work by different methods (hormone stimulation vs adding blood).

    • • Heart rate monitor
    • • Carbo-loading

    Answer: Goal-line technology

This confirms whether the ball crossed the line.

  5. 5. Which drug increases muscle mass and strength but risks liver damage?

    • • Beta blockers
    • • Anabolic steroids
    • • Diuretics
    • • Narcotic analgesics
