How science papers are typically structured

  • Papers commonly mix objective (multiple-choice) questions, short structured questions, longer structured questions and at least one extended 6-mark response question.
  • Marks are usually spread across recall, application to unfamiliar contexts, and analysis of data or experimental results, so revision needs to cover more than just definitions.
  • Question papers often follow the order of topics in the specification, but questions can also draw on more than one topic at once (synoptic questions).
  • Always check the current specification and specimen assessment materials on your exam board's own website, because the exact structure, number of papers and question styles can change between years.
  • Read the number of marks and the space given for an answer — both are hints about how much detail and how many separate points are expected.

Command words and what they demand

  • 'State' or 'Name' wants a brief fact with no explanation needed; 'Describe' wants what happens, in sequence or with detail, but not why.
  • 'Explain' always needs a reason or mechanism — link a cause to an effect using words like 'because' or 'so that'.
  • 'Calculate' requires a numerical answer with working shown and the correct unit; 'Estimate' allows an approximate value from given information.
  • 'Evaluate' asks you to weigh up strengths and weaknesses of a method, idea or set of data and reach a justified conclusion.
  • 'Compare' needs explicit comparative language (e.g. 'higher than', 'unlike') rather than two separate, unlinked descriptions.

Weigh up strengths and weaknesses and reach a justified overall judgement.
Justify
Support a stated conclusion or choice using evidence or reasoning.
Independent variable
The factor that is deliberately changed in an investigation.
Dependent variable
The factor that is measured as a result of changing the independent variable.
Control variable
A factor kept constant so a test is fair.
Precision
How close repeated measurements are to each other.

Common exam traps

  • Writing a description when the command word 'Explain' actually needs a reason or mechanism.
  • Giving a calculation answer with no working shown, losing method marks even if the final number is correct.
  • Forgetting units or giving an answer to an unreasonable number of significant figures.

    Rearranged forms can also give image size = actual size × magnification.

  4. 4. A cell of actual length 0.02 mm is drawn 40 mm long. Calculate the magnification.

    Answer: ×2000

    Magnification = image size ÷ actual size = 40 ÷ 0.02 = 2000.

  5. 5. In a core practical testing enzyme activity at different temperatures, what is the independent variable?

    • • Rate of reaction
    • • Temperature
    • • Volume of enzyme
    • • Type of enzyme

    Answer: Temperature

    The independent variable is the factor deliberately changed by the experimenter.
